The coffee was perfect. Maria took a long, slow sip, savoring the warmth that spread through her. The small cafe was her sanctuary, a place where the daily stresses of life seemed to melt away. The familiar clatter of cups, the gentle chatter of other patrons, the aroma of freshly baked bread – all were deeply comforting. She had a full weekend ahead.

A package arrived, delivered by the post. Her hands shook slightly as she opened it; a letter from a law firm in a faraway state. She was listed as the beneficiary of some property, according to a recent will, and her father, who she thought was dead, had another daughter, an older one. Maria’s calm demeanor was suddenly fractured. It was as if a cold wind had blown through the cafe.
